Our Mission

Welcome to Coffee & Whiskey. We’re dedicated to giving you the very best in topics, with a focus on our Chronicles being men over their 40’s.

We’ve been friends since 2001. When we first met, it was by accident. Mr. Coffee was a new chef in town that replaced our chef we usually prepares for us. Immediately, we connected and found that we have a lot in common. Through our friendship, we had many outings and discussions of random things…some hilarious and some serious.

We thought it would be good to keep a journal of our discussions and our outings. Instead, Mr. Coffee said why not just blog it where we can share our stories, interests, hobbies, compare and contrast from how we grew up to where things are today.

Our Values

We started this blog site in June 2023, and our mission is on…

Blogging a Journey of Men’s Embetterment to another level.

We hope our blog can allow men over 40 an open community to share many topics in an honest manner. In our chronicles we will provide real insight on life for men over 40 loosely based on our experiences throughout the years.

Men in their 40’s, 50’s and so on face many interesting events, situations, milestones, and family matters… some taboo, some real life issues, and achievements. We at Coffee-Whiskey simply want to provide a platform for men over 40 to share real stories, lifestyles, hobbies, interests, ideas, products, our passion, and most importantly to engage, relate to, motivate and inspire each other.

Mr. Coffee is a male in his 40’s, and Mr. Whiskey is a male in his 50’s and these are our Chronicles…

Cheers,

Mr. Coffee ☕️

Investing in Your Kitchen

One new passion or skill that can improve mental health for middle-aged men is cooking, particularly Japanese food. This activity is not only about preparing food for loved ones or a job but also about a culture and lifestyle for chefs and those who take cooking seriously. Begin by investing in a high-quality knife, like one made of carbon steel, to chop thin slices and prepare delicious meals.

Chefs should own different tools, but a knife is the extension of a chef’s hands, making it a vital utensil. We can tell a lot about a chef by the knife he possesses, depending on the following:

  • Cleanliness—Portrays the chef’s work ethic and the time he invests in cleaning after their shift.
  • Sharpness—Shows the chef’s skills and precision in his work.
  • Shape—Represents the chef’s experience, style, and character throughout his culinary career.
  • Choice—Expresses the chef’s dream and vision, as knives range in brands, types, and prices.

Types of Japanese Knives

  • Gyuto—A very practical knife used to cut meats and vegetables and for prepping.
  • Yanagiba—Commonly used as a sashimi knife by sushi and Japanese cuisine chefs.
  • Deba—Unique knife used mainly to filet fish or meats and cut through bones.
  • Usuba—All intricate Japanese vegetable cutting is done using this knife.
  • Pairing—Useful when cutting small vegetables and fruits or to make detailed work.
